This is good hill walking country. The Southern Upland Way passes within twenty metres. Close by is the Tweed Valley Forest Park including Glentress which is designed to cater for all standards of walking and mountain biking. Innerleithen Downhill course is an international acclaimed mountain bike facility for advanced standard mountain bikers. There are Osprey Watch centres in Glentress and Kailzie Gardens. There are also local opportunities for: dinghy sailing (on St Mary's Loch); swimming (in Peebles and Hawick); horse riding at various local stables; fishing on the Tweed, golf - e.g. at the courses at nearby Cardrona, Innerleithen and Peebles.
The nearest shops are in Innerleithen, a distance of 3 miles away, where facilities include: a Co-op, a post office, a health centre, a baker, a high quality butcher, and various small general food shops as well as the renowned Cauldwell's ice-cream shop. There are also pubs and restaurants, a bike shop and a number of interesting antique shops. Traquair is the location of Traquair House - which claims to be the oldest inhabited house in Scotland. In the grounds are a maze and the Traquair brewery.
The journey to Edinburgh takes one hour by car or about an hour and a half by bus from Innerleithen, where the 62B bus route stops on its journey from Melrose to Peebles and Edinburgh, with a half hourly service for much of the day.
